October 2009

Hello Everyone,

Even though the weather this summer didn't seem to be that great, it sure didn't stop us from getting out to the field and having a great time flying. This season has been filled with great memories, great flying, and an all around good time. But the season isn't over yet. As a matter of fact, we have our club's big IMAA 2-day event coming up and there are some other great flying events around New England.

News from the President:

As many of you know we had to close the road temporarily so the vehicles using it would not receive damage to their tires. Thanks to the volunteers that showed up to help clear nails, trash, etc from the newly constructed road. It was our hope that we wouldn't have to top dress it until next year, but we had to move up the time table somewhat sooner than anticipated. As is stands right now (weather permitting) the next stage should be completed by October 10th, just in time for the IMAA event. Keep your fingers crossed

Thanks again to the many volunteers who worked at the neighbor's picnic. The people who organized, bought the food, cooked, served and cleaned up really did a terrific job. Volunteerism is what makes our club work. Our hats are off to you all.

October 17th and 19th is our next event and we expect a great turn out. Anyone that can donate their time that weekend will surely be appreciated. Contact one of the officers if you can assist. Parking, food, and administrative are the areas where most help is needed. This is a club fund raiser that helps support the field so the better we manage it the greater the potential we can make a tidy profit. Hope to see you there.

    19. Upon extensive review by Chris Petriccione (Safety Officer), and club officers, the East Coast Swamp Flyers will no allow helicopters to fly 3D style flight in close promiximity, nor will we allow helicopters to fly sustained 3D patterns. These changes have come about based on multiple complaints and the extreme concerns of safety for all of our members. All 3D maneuvers must be done over the tall grass on the far side of the runway, and must be done within the confines of the flying pattern. This means you can come down, do a maneuver, and then you must re-enter the pattern. No sustained 3D maneuvering is allowed.

    Upcoming Picnics, Events, and Meetings:

2009 East Coast Swamp Flyers Picnic & Event Schedule:

    ECSF Annual IMAA Fly-In: October 17th & 18th
This year we will be continuing on last year's successful IMAA event by hosting another one at the swamp. After all the positive comments we received from participants of last year's event, we are hoping to draw in more participants, more amazing aircraft, and more money for the club. We will also be having a two day event this year, which means even more flyers and even more great flying. Can't wait for this one. The club is also looking for volunteers to help with cooking, parking, and any other needs that may arise.

ECSF Annual Christmas Party - December 16th
Last year's Christmas party had an incredible 60+ members eating their way through a ton of pizza. Due to the fact that we had standing room only for some members, we have decided to make a change of venue for this year's party. That change of venue is yet to be determined, but our main goal is to find a place with great food and plenty of room. As soon as we find the right place, we will let you know.

    2009 ECSF Club Meetings:

October 21st - Meeting will be held at the Foxon Community Center.
Novermber 18th - Meeting will be hold at the Foxon Community Center.

    Event and Picnic Review:

August 9th - Summer Picnic and Fun Fly

Well, after we were rained out the first weekend, it held off just long enough to get in some good flying the next weekend. It was cloudy most of the day, with a little sunshine peeking through the clouds once in a while. That didn't stop us from getting in some great flying. We had a great turnout of pilots, great food as always, and there are some great pictures that Patrick Tuxbury took and put on our website.

August 9th - Summer Picnic and Fun Fly

What a beautiful day of flying and an amazing turnout of pilots an neighbors. I personally haven't seen that many pilots at the field all year long. It is always great to see our many members flying, eating, talking, and having a wonderful time. The neighbors also enjoyed the day of free food and watching some great flying. I would also like to personally thank all the cooking staff and Don from Good Times Karaoke DJ and Entertainment for supplying and running the P.A. system, which allowed us to speak to the masses without having to loose our voices. It also supplied us all with enjoyable music throughout the day and the spot-on Top Gun "Danger Zone" sound track that played during Chris Petriccione's demonstration of his Turbine Jet.

    New and Returning Members:

July: Robert Sortere, Dror Sharon, Tyler Ippi
    August: Vincent Esposito, Ted Karbowski

    Field Construction and Condition Update:

I would first like to thank Ed Olstein and volunteers for making an incredible effort to clean up the new road. I was told they picked up 5+ large garbage bags full of trash and metal debris from the road. Unfortunately there is a chance that more debris lies just beneath the surface, waiting for a rainfall to bring it up. Because of this concern, the new road has been permanently closed until further notice.

Our president, Joe Malec, has been in contact with a contractor to finish the road and fix the bridge. The work to finish the road includes regrading, widening, clearing out some stumps, and putting on a top layer.

See you in the skies above the swamp!
